Biodiversity
Montrose Estates is home to an exceptional diversity of wildlife and habitats, many of which are recognised as being of national and international importance. From the Loch Lomond National Nature Reserve and the Endrick Water Special Area of Conservation to Ramsar wetlands and Sites of Special Scientific Interest, the Estate plays an important role in protecting some of Scotland's most valuable natural environments.
Our varied landscape of rivers, wetlands, ancient woodland, farmland and upland habitats supports an extraordinary range of plants, birds and wildlife. Ospreys, buzzards, curlew, barn owls and red squirrels are regularly seen across the Estate, while the River Endrick provides habitat for Atlantic salmon, lamprey and the increasingly established Eurasian beaver. Rare species such as the Loch Lomond dock, found only around the loch's lower basin, thrive within the Estate's internationally important wetlands.
Protecting this biodiversity is central to how Montrose Estates manages the land. Working in partnership with organisations including NatureScot, Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park and the Loch Lomond Fisheries Trust, we undertake habitat restoration, invasive species control, woodland regeneration, wetland management and carefully managed deer control to ensure wildlife continues to flourish. These long-term management practices help create healthy, resilient ecosystems that will benefit both nature and future generations.
